Volk revisited

Liberal-democratic constitutional orders are increasingly witnessing 'populist' protests against the way the constitution is implemented by 'the elite'. Although the constitution is considered to be authorised by the people, the 'real people' feel excluded from it. Can this tension be sustained? Or do we need to reconceive the constitutional role of the people?
