August Kopisch

August Kopisch Painter · Poet · Discoverer · Inventor August Kopisch (1799-1853), born in Breslau, Prussia (now Wroclaw, Poland), was one of the most versatile artists of the 19th century. His work, more than that of any other artist, combines painting, poetry, investigation, and ingenuity. In 1826, he made a name for himself by discovering the Blue Grotto on the island of Capri, a major tourist attraction ever since. Kopisch's paintings have a poetic radiance of their own. With his favorite colors-a magical blue full of longing and the sumptuous red of sunsets-he created impressive renderings of light phenomena. Among his main literary works is a metric translation of Dante's "Divine Comedy." Best known, however, is his popular poem, "Die Heinzelmännchen" (The Brownies). This volume offers the first overview of Kopisch's uniquely diverse work, and next to his richly colored paintings, drawings, poems, translations, and letters also presents his inventions, such as the so-called "high-speed oven.
