The Mexican artist FRIDA KAHLO (1907-1954) holds one of the most important positions in 20th-century art. Her painting combines elements of Surrealism with influences from the popular culture of Latin America, but also allows the "Magic Realism" of Neue Sachlichkeit to shine through. ROXANA VELÁSQUEZ is the director of the San Diego Museum of Art.
