Frida Kahlo

The Mexican artist FRIDA KAHLO (1907-1954) holds one of the most important positions in 20th-century art. Her painting combines elements of Surrealism with influences from the popular culture of Latin America, but also allows the "Magic Realism" of Neue Sachlichkeit to shine through. ROXANA VELÁSQUEZ is the director of the San Diego Museum of Art. She enjoys international recognition as an expert on Frida Kahlo and has curated major exhibitions on her work, such as Frida Kahlo 1907-2007 and the National Homage at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico, in 2007.
