Henry James: the Representation of Reality offers an audacious approach to Henry James's works. The book examines James's fictional practice with reference to the idea of literary realism, arguing that James is a consistent realist throughout his fictional career for he tirelessly searches for truth in human relations, be it a relation of one to oneself, one to others, or one to the outside world. To demonstrate the argument, the book explores James's works produced during three different phases of his fictional career: the early, middle and final phases. The book finds that James's version of realism changes as his fictional career develops from one phase to another.
